The Witcher explained: From Yennefer’s makeover to the Law of Surprise – a beginner’s guide

You might have a few questions after diving into The Witcher on Netflix. What is the Law of Surprise? How did Yennefer get the hump – and then lose it? Why does Henry Cavill’s gravel-voiced anti-hero maintain the same hair-style across multiple timelines? And also – there are multiple timelines? 

Netflix’s new fantasy saga, adapted from the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, has a lot going on. One area where it falls down quite seriously is in giving newcomers the lay of the land. Game of Thrones’s ingenius step was to do this in a very literal sense by repurposing the opening credits as an idiot’s guide to Westeros via its clockwork map. 

The same approach would have worked wonders with The Witcher....
