There are many iterations of Harajuku style, from Lolita to Cosplay, but what unites them is a hyper-feminine cutesy-ness.
The 2019 resurgence of Harajuku style owes a debt to several influences, from Netflix’s Queer Eye Japan miniseries, in which they spend time in the Tokyo neighbourhood, to Stefani, who was forced to respond to allegations of cultural appropriation last month. There’s also been renewed interest in Japan as a travel destination with the country playing host to 2019’s Rugby World Cup, followed by the Olympics in 2020 - with Harajuku a major stop on the Tokyo tourist trail, it’s likely received a few mentions in travel guides.
The only genuine fashion trend on the list, the preppy aesthetic takes inspiration from American East Coast collegiate style. It’s sweaters slung over shoulders and knotted at the neck; it’s popped collars; it’s your dad’s tweed blazer with patches at the elbow.
