Planning to spend this year’s summer holidays here in the UK? If so, you’re not alone. And like many other Brits, with B&Bs and hotels expected to be packed, your thoughts may have turned to the idea of trying a caravan holiday.
三级成人视频After all, used caravans are relatively affordable, and if you aren’t quite ready to take the plunge and buy a home on wheels then rentals are plentiful. And having spent all this time cooped up at home, the idea of a couple of weeks spent working your way along the coast once lockdown has lifted, enjoying a different sunset each night from beneath the awning of your own caravan, is rather appealing.
But if you’re going to give caravanning a go, you’ll need a car to tow your ’van with. That’s where we can help. You don’t have to spend an awful lot to bag yourself a capable used tow car; in fact, we’ve lined up five of our favourites – and prices start at just £2,000.
£2,000: Hyundai Tucson (2004-2010)
三级成人视频The first-generation Tucson had ‘budget car’ written all over it – from the slightly wonky styling to the cheap-feeling plastics inside. That might not sound like much of a recommendation but bear with us because, where it matters, the Tucson is a great tow car.
For starters, it could be had with four-wheel drive – meaning the 2.0 CRTD 4x4 models available within this budget could cope with towing anything up to a moderately sized caravan. And while the engine is a little on the vocal side and the way the Tucson handles is nothing to write home about, it’s a comfortable car and most versions got lots of equipment.
Reliability ratings are pretty decent, too, and there’s plenty of space inside for a family and a bunch of camping kit. If it’s a budget tow car you’re after, then, the Tucson is a great shout.
Price to pay: from £1,500
We found:三级成人视频 2006 Tucson 2.0 CRTD GSI, 87,000 miles, full service history, £1,999
Watch out for: Notchy manual gearboxes suggesting the 60k transmission oil change has been missed, rusty rear subframes, worn interior plastics and fabrics.
£5,000: Ford S-Max (2006-2015)
MPVs or people carriers such as the S-Max might not be all that popular these days, but don’t write them off – with vast amounts of space and immensely versatile interiors, they make great family cars. Use all seven seats if you need to – or you can fold the rearmost pair down and use the S-Max’s five full-size chairs with a whopping boot. And into the bargain, the S-Max is even good to drive, with a comfortable ride and surprisingly sporting handling.
三级成人视频Many owners report good reliability from their S-Maxes – their popularity among taxi fleets backs that up – and as a tow car, the 2.0 diesel’s low-down pulling power and high kerb weight make it an excellent choice. All S-Maxes had a pre-installed connection in the boot for tow bar wiring, too.
Price to pay: from £2,500
We found: 2010 S-Max 2.0 TDCi Zetec, 78,000 miles, full service history, £5,000
Watch out for: Weak handbrakes, slipping clutches and shattering dual-mass flywheels on diesels, automatic gearbox problems.
£10,000: Volvo XC60 (2008-2017)
Should you need evidence of the XC60’s credibility as a tow car, look no further than its place as the overall winner of the 2009 Tow Car Awards. Judges praised its “near-ideal balance between the iron-fisted control of an Audi Q5 and the plushness of a Land Rover Discovery”.
三级成人视频Plushness is certainly what the XC60 offers in spades – it’s softly sprung, so it isn’t all that sporty to drive, but the payoff is gloriously comfortable long-distance cruising ability. It’s quiet, too, and the D5 engine offers loads of low-down grunt, making the XC60 well suited even to the largest caravans.
Inside, meanwhile, there’s a beautifully finished interior, loads of toys on most models, and plenty of space.
Price to pay: 三级成人视频from £6,000
We found: 2010 XC60 D5 SE Lux, 71,000 miles, full service history, £9,995
Watch out for: 三级成人视频Soot build-up in D4 engines causes engine warning light to illuminate; expensive to fix; high oil levels caused by diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration problems.
£15,000: Skoda Superb (2015-present)
三级成人视频It’s no secret that we’re big fans of the Skoda Superb. Not only is the boot simply vast, but there are oodles of space in the rear seats; what’s more, the Superb rides comfortably, and when fitted with the excellent 2.0-litre diesel engine – which complies with the latest Euro 6 emissions standards – it offers a winning blend of pulling power and efficiency.
When hitched to a caravan, the Superb is superbly stable (sorry), and its high maximum towing weight means it’s capable of hauling all but the largest vans. Meanwhile, even the hatchback offers a boot that’d shame some rival estates – though if you really do want to travel with everything but the kitchen sink, there’s a Superb estate, too, and it’s simply vast inside.
Price to pay:三级成人视频 from £10,000
We found:三级成人视频 2018 Superb 2.0 TDI 150 SE Technology, 24,000 miles, full service history, £14,990
Watch out for: Electrical glitches, hesitation with 1.5-litre petrol engines, corroding rear brake discs.
£20,000: Kia Sorento (2015-present)
三级成人视频Big, heavy 4x4s tend to make excellent tow cars, and given the Sorento is one of the best-value big 4x4s out there, it isn’t hard to understand why it makes this list.
Also on its side are its practicality – you get seven seats as standard, and when they’re folded into the floor, a vast boot – and its whopping manufacturer warranty which, at seven years or 100,000 miles, means there’ll be loads left on a used example bought for this budget.
The Sorento isn’t the most sophisticated SUV to drive, but it is one of the most reliable around; what’s more, it’s comfortable and very well equipped, and with four-wheel drive as standard it’s both stable at speed and confidence-inspiring in slippery conditions when you’re hitched up.
Price to pay: from £17,000
We found:三级成人视频 2016 Sorento 2.2 CRDi KX-4 auto, 34,000 miles, full service history, £19,995
Watch out for: Slipping clutches on manual cars.
